Coventry City Police was one of the first professional police forces in the West Midlands Area, established in 1836.
It has a long and proud history and has much to be remembered for, including how the force coped with the devastation of enemy air raids during World War 11 and recruiting the first Asian officer in the country in 1966, amongst many other achievements.
In 1969 it was briefly amalgamated with Warwickshire before becoming part of West Midlands Police in 1974, which is the current police force for the West Midlands area.
We are pleased to be able to share some fantastic stories of heroes, villains, pioneers and fallen comrades, along with lots of brilliant pictures, as part of our work celebrating the history of policing Coventry through Coventry City of Culture 2021 – 2022.
Untold pressures were placed on the police service during World War 2. With hundreds of their experienced officers leaving to join the forces, they had to recruit additional special constables and auxiliaries including the First Police reserve, Police War Reserve, the Police Auxiliary Messengers and the Women’s Auxiliary Police Corps.
Through this book we are proud to tell the stories of those who risked their lives protecting the people and properties of Birmingham, and those from the Birmingham City Police who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The West Midlands Police Museum is fortunate to have comprehensive archives of police personnel records and photographs, which have allowed us to bring the stories of the Second World War to life and ensure the heroes of the Birmingham Police are recognised and never forgotten.
